Para Los Niños began providing mental health care to families more than 20 years ago and remains the only children’s mental health provider in the Skid Row neighborhood. In the spirit of Mental Health Month, we want to share what makes our staff and program exceptional as well as encourage our community of staff, supporters and families to prioritize their wellbeing.

Meet Azucena Garcia, a therapist at Para Los Niños. Growing up as a Mexican-American woman, she knew there was a significant need for mental health services in her community.  “My understanding of our culture became a motivational vehicle to support people as they navigate their experiences and challenges,” she says. “At PLN, I know that my colleagues and I are rooted in care for our clients and the communities we are a part of. Our work isn’t always easy, but we often approach our work with love and understanding because many of us understand first-hand the positive implications our work has on both individuals and entire communities.”

In fact, many of our staff members are representative of the communities we partner with. PLN provides unique training opportunities, including professional development that encourages therapists to use intersectional frameworks in their practice. We know that race, ethnicity and cultural background all play a factor in how we experience the world around us and the lens through which we see our lives. Research suggests that therapists who can make culturally relevant adjustments to Evidence Based Practices decrease client-engagement challenges, thus increasing access to care.

But it’s not just the cultural norms we’re born into that impacts our wellbeing and ability to seek support; we are also impacted by systems rooted in discrimination. Experiencing racism, living in under resourced communities, being food or housing insecure can create ongoing stress and even trauma due to long-term exposure. “I’ve had the privilege of learning how systemic barriers often show up in the lives of our clients,” she says, “This perspective has deeply informed my work as a therapist.”

That’s why enrolling in mental health services is so meaningful for our community. “I would say that taking the step to seek therapy is incredibly brave and powerful—especially if you come from a background where mental health is often stigmatized,” says Azucena, “Breaking generational cycles takes tremendous strength, and it’s something to be extremely proud of.”

Our mental health staff are an essential part of PLN’s work to partner with children, youth and families to achieve their educational, emotional and economic goals. It’s not just about providing point-in-time services, but rather being a part of a network of support that honors the complexity and dignity of all people. To do that authentically, therapists like Azucena create real relationships based in trust, respect and a profound commitment to community. “It’s truly an honor and a constant source of inspiration to witness my clients’ growth and resilience. Their journeys remind me of the power of healing and human strength.”

Thank you to all mental health professionals for the work you do every day to support our collective healing.
