The journey to higher education can be particularly daunting for first-generation college students, who often lack the familial experience to guide them through the process. This challenge is exemplified by Elaine, a freshman at Mount Saint Mary’s University. Her story highlights the crucial role that support programs, such as Para Los Niños’ Youth Workforce Services (YWS), play in helping students navigate the complexities of college life.

Elaine is a Pre-Med major also earning a minor in Business Administration. She is not only focused on her goals but also serves as a source of inspiration for others facing similar challenges. Graduating in June 2028, she hopes to continue her education to become an ER doctor, and she credits the resources and mentorship she received from PLN as key to her success.

When Elaine found out about PLN and the career advice it offers, she eagerly joined, knowing it would be a big help. She soon learned about YWS’s Avanzando Through College program, which guided her through the complex college application process, including important steps like filling out the FAFSA. This support made her transition to university much smoother.

The resources and mentorship from PLN have helped Elaine not just academically, but also as a leader. As Co-President of the YWS Youth Advisory Council for 2024–2025, she has developed her leadership and communication skills and gained confidence in public speaking. Her journey shows how support systems can inspire personal growth and encourage students to take risks.

Elaine’s work with YWS emphasizes the value of seeking help when needed. As Elaine says, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help; it might seem scary, but there’s always someone ready to support you.”

As we push for educational equity, Elaine’s journey reminds us of the importance of community and connection. With the right resources and encouragement, dreams can come true. For Elaine, who is thriving in her studies and enjoying campus life, PLN’s support has made all the difference.

To empower more students like Elaine to pursue their college dreams, we invite you to support the YWS College Send-Off event. This exciting event will showcase over 70 students as they announce their plans to attend trade schools, colleges and universities in Fall 2025. Each of these students has benefitted from comprehensive services provided by YWS staff, including college and career readiness programs, access to paid internships, and much more. Your generous contributions can help ensure that we continue to offer these vital resources
