At Para Los Niños Charter Schools, a child’s emotional wellbeing is just as crucial to their overall success as their academic abilities (and often are a prerequisite to their academic success). This is why, in addition to striving for excellent, STEAM based academics, a team of social workers supports our scholars and their families throughout the school year. This Social Workers Month, we want to uplift the work this team does by highlighting one of its stellar members.

Jessica Fernandez is in her third year as a social worker for Para Los Niños’ Charter Elementary School (CES), after receiving her B.A. from University of California, Irvine in Psychology and her Masters in Social Work from California State University, Fullerton. “I always knew I wanted to work in a school. I found PLN and liked that they focus on the whole child,” says Jessica.

PLN social workers focus not only on students’ issues as they arise, but also on proactively addressing the common struggles adolescents face. Part of this work includes bringing together students with similar experiences to create social connections. For example, Jessica co-facilitates a group for students who have recently arrived from other countries. Simply switching schools can be a deeply difficult transition for any child, even more so when the new school is in a completely new country. As the daughter of two immigrants from Mexico, Jessica understood the unique challenges these students might face in their new environment. “This is a space where students can feel that their culture is valued, that their language is valued, and where they can share their immigration journeys,” she said.

But that’s not the only connection that makes this work deeply meaningful for her. “I dealt with a lot of bullying in middle school, and I didn’t know how to speak up. I didn’t know how to tell my teacher, and I didn’t know how to tell my parents, so I just bottled all those feelings up. Seeing what a school social worker does, that’s all I wanted to do. I wish little-me had this person I could go to and tell what’s going on,” Jessica says.

Now in her role at PLN, she can be that source of support and comfort. Jessica leads a club for 5th grade girls at CES, working on building their self-esteem and creating a space where the girls can be themselves, speak their mind, and develop the social-emotional skills necessary to exceed throughout the transformative middle school years.

One student, a member of the club during the 2023-2024 school year, was initially shy and reserved. After her year in the club, and now a 6th grader at Para Los Niños Charter Middle School (CMS), the student is trying things she never thought she would, like joining the CMS volleyball team. Jessica stays in touch with her students after their graduation from elementary school, remaining a supportive adult figure in their lives throughout middle school and beyond.

“PLN has been so supportive of this work… knowing that the students’ academic success is tied to their social-emotional wellbeing. I’m grateful to be apart of an organization that understands needing to support the whole child.”
