For most children, summer is a time of fun and excitement, but for 18 million children in communities across the country it means the end of access to the free or reduced-price meals that nourish them during the school year.
On June 23, Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, hosted a special volunteer event with celebrity friends Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Darby Stanchfield (ABC’s Scandal) at the Charter Elementary School. Greene, Stanchfield and other volunteers toured the campus, served lunch and distributed fresh produce to 120 of our summer students.
“The end of the school year is a stressful time for many families across the country,” said Diana Aviv, Chief Executive Officer of Feeding America. “When children lose access to school meals their families’ grocery bills skyrocket and families are forced to make tough choices between food and other basic necessities.”
The student farmers market was covered by media outlets such as: MSN, People Magazine, and Yahoo News– just to name a few.
